Introduction to Ashford University

Adult Education On-line

For many workers who have been displaced by the economic downturn, and have seen their salary or retirement income slashed or who fear the worst is yet to come, going back to school at Ashford University is looking more and more appealing. I have been there and I can tell you that at the age of 43 I did not want this to happen. However, with over 18 years in Corporate America, and 12 years of Entrepreneurship to my credit, I found myself out of sync with the economic recession that we have undergone in the last several years.

In response, on-line universities, professional organizations and everything in between are expanding their course offerings and retooling their curriculum's. Therefore, going back to school is easier and more affordable today than ever. The federal stimulus program and local government initiatives have helped fuel a surge of courses and of students. This makes it near impossible to filter through all of the on-line colleges and degree programs offered.

However, there are a few resources that should help you define exactly the type of program that you need or want to study. To help workers figure out which positions and skill sets are most in demand and best for them, the Department of Labor maintains the O*Net Web site, which has a vast database of information about jobs within each industry. It shows which are in highest demand, what kind of training; work experience and education are typical for each position, the expected salary and other information. There is even a way to search for jobs by the skills they require (for example, skills of persuasion, knowledge of systems analysis, fluency in Microsoft Excel and so on).

Going Back To School

Ashford University

After personally contacting 35 of the top on-line colleges, I chose Ashford University because; their college is geared specifically to the adult student. Furthermore, I will receive an accredited degree without the designation on my diploma as an On-Line College (That was very, very important to me). What does this mean you ask? I am considered a virtual student and may attend and participate in my graduation at the college which is located in Clinton, Iowa.

Whether this is your first time going to college or a returning student you will find that you are transitioned into the college lifestyle with care and continuous support. I can balance my busy lifestyle and business with online coursework as I earn my Bachelor's in Accounting, with two minors one in Public Administration and the other in Project Management.

Furthermore, I am given my own personal Student Portal and Backboard that I can access 24/7. I can also get support for any service including access to my professors 24/7 as well. In addition to the above mentioned, I am also given my own personal Enrollment Advisor (Armando Heredia), Academic Advisor (Joyce Yin), and Financial Services Advisor (Dennis Lui). I cannot say enough wonderful things about them or Ashford University.

You'll find Ashford University®, founded in 1918, is an ideal choice for you whether you're a working adult or haven't yet completed your degree. You can count on Ashford University to provide a high-quality degree program that is:

Affordable

Benefit from one of the lowest program costs available online. Bachelor's courses are $354 per credit, while Master's courses start at $463 per credit.

Accelerated

Depending on the number of any applied transfer credits, you may be able to finish your degree program in as few as 12 months. Classes are 5-6 weeks and are taken one at a time. Plus, you can transfer up to 99 approved credits toward your Bachelor's degree.

Convenient

Enjoy the flexibility of online courses 24 hours a day. Online classes are asynchronous, so like with email, you can login anytime to participate and post your work in class.

Call Armando Heredia, who is my personal Enrollment Advisor at 800.798.0584 x2467 today and tell him Katie sent you!

Financial Aid – How it works

Money for College

You may think that this is going to be a difficult road to travel upon. However, much to my surprise this was the easy part of the entire process. I personally applied for and received the full Pell Grant along with the Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loan. The Loans do not need to be repaid until 6 months after I graduate and the Pell Grant never needs to be repaid. Therefore, I received $ 9,500.00 in Federal Loans and $ 5,350.00 for the Pell Grant yearly (as long as I qualify). I receive a Stipend check, approx. every three months, from Ashford University for the unused portion of my Pell Grant. This works out really well because I can use that money for anything I require. (Examples, school supplies, books, or anything else I wish to purchase with it.)

3 Steps to Appling for Financial Aid.

  1. Step 1 – Get your Income Tax Paperwork together and Apply for your PIN - Go to the link on the right to Apply.
  2. Step 2 – Apply for your Free Financial Aid and use Federal School Code: 001881 for Ashford University
  3. Step 3 – Follow up and make any necessary changes to your Application -

That is all there is to it!

Financial Aid Stipend Money Coming At You!

Ashford University Stipend Check Policy

I have received a lot of questions concerning Ashford University's Stipend Check Process:

So here Goes:

You Will receive an email entitled: Financial Aid Award Letter

In that E-mail will be the amounts that you are awarded as well as when the amounts will become available to you.

  • Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan 06/16/2009 $ 0.00
  • Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan 06/16/2009 $ 0.00
  • Pell Grant 07/07/2009 $ 0.00
  • Federal Subsidized Stafford Loan 10/27/2009 $ 0.00
  • Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan 10/27/2009 $ 0.00
  • Pell Grant 10/27/2009 $ 0.00

After charges are paid, if any excess financial aid funds remain on your account, a check for thirty percent (30%) of the excess funds will be mailed to you after successful completion of seven (7) weeks of continuous academic enrollment. The remaining seventy percent (70%) of any excess financial aid funds will be mailed to you after successful completion of fourteen (14) weeks of continuous academic enrollment.

Federal financial aid funds are available to students based on payment periods. This award letter includes funding for the academic year. The estimated disbursement dates and amounts are noted in the chart below. Please note that prior to any disbursement you are required to meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP) standards. For more information on SAP, go to www.ashford.edu. In addition, you are required to reapply for federal financial aid each award year to establish continuing federal financial aid eligibility.

Please note that the following award may be subject to change at the discretion of the financial aid office.

Now for the Real Deal: Being my Pell Grant came after my loans came through, I did not get my first stipend check until 07/24/08. It was delayed by 2 weeks. However, my Financial Advisor jumped right in and made sure that a check was issued ASAP. My second check came in on time 08/26/09.

The next batch of Financial Aid is due to come in on 10/27/09. The clock will not start again until my fifth class, which begins on 10/06/09 and then the seven weeks begin all over again. Hopefully I will not have as much trouble this time around. However, If I do Dennis Lui will be right there fixing it for me again. Your Advisors are always in your corner and will fight for whatever you need.

College Life

Now, getting back into the swing of college life will be a challenge. However, you are given instructions and support the whole way through. They assist you with everything from college transcripts to giving you a $99.99 coupon towards your first courses books. The classes are, from my experience, 23 to 38 students per course.

You start a new course every 5 weeks. I like to call my courses speed dials, because before you know it they are over. I am going on my 4th class and have a G.P.A. of 3.50.

Do not get me wrong, you must be self motivated and really want your degree in a short period of time. This way of schooling, although convent, is very intense and demands a lot of writing. Moreover, you are learning the course material in 5 weeks verses a 3 month long traditional class. However, as I believe, nothing worthwhile comes easy.

I hope this Hub helps you to branch out, believe, receive, and succeed. If there is any more information that I can help you with, or anything in particular that I have not addressed please feel free to e-mail me.

Thank you for making this site! I am in my second course at Ashford and have just received a stipend check and the info that you provided was very helpful in clarifying future disbursements..I guess that next check is coming right before Christmas...ohhh the temptation:/ What do you do with your stipend checks?

cluense profile image

cluense Hub Author 18 months ago

Katie,

Firstly, I am so glad I could help you through my article. I originally wrote it because no one offered any answers. Secondly, I use my stipend checks for:

1. Future course books and materials from Amazon.com - Never buy a book from the Saints Book store! It is always cheaper on Amazon.com

2. I save half of the remainder for life's many little emergencies.

3. The other half of the remainder usually goes on catching up on bills or the kids needs. (They never stop eating or growing!)

You will find that if you manage your stipend check well you will always have a few extra dollars!

Angel 16 months ago

Thanks for the info! Im currently entering my 7th week at Ashford n just recevied my award letter. I guess my stipend will come soon from what u wrote! Cool I desperately need a lap top! I thought they told me u get half and half though.... o well whatever I get now will help! Hopefully its enough for a laptop! Ty for your reccomendation on the books I will follow your advice! Are you still enrolled?

cluense profile image

cluense Hub Author 15 months ago

Hello Angel,

You are welcome. Yes, I am still enrolled and you should see your first check 7 days after the date stated on your award letter. However, anytime off, scheduling changes (delaying a class), failing a class, and the like will delay your check 5 weeks for each incident.

Also, your first check of the new school year is usually bigger then the second disbursement. They also hold 2 to 3 class payments behind. (ex. Your award letter for the first disbursement is $5,000.00, they will hold back $3,000.00 ect)

Glad I could help!

Hey, can the financial aid money only be applied to tuition expenses, or can it be used for items pertaining to education such as the purchase of a laptop?

Rebekah Anne Haeger 13 months ago

hi! I started ashford last year in october and got a check in febuary. now its almost april so will i get my check in the next month?

mrs p 13 months ago

I received my first disbursement on 4/11/11 I was just wondering when will I receive my next disbursement?

cluense profile image

cluense Hub Author 13 months ago

Generally speaking you should have received an award letter e-mailed to you. It would state when you should received your next disbursement. You must allow a full 7 business days for processing. You should be able to see your award letter in your portal, under financial. Hope that helps. Katie

will I get an email or something telling me a stipend check is heading my way?

cluense profile image

cluense Hub Author 11 months ago

Ryan,

You will receive an e-mail stating what you were approved for, when it should be disbursed to you, and then check you portal on that date to see if the money was sent out to you. You can now have your stipend checks Direct deposited to your bank now. It just started last week. Go to your portal, under finances, and sign-up! Hope that helps! Katie

I have been with Ashford for 3 years. My pell was taken away from me; I appealed and won. $255.00. There was a time when I would receive $2500.00 this week and a few weeks later I would recieve $3000 on my stipend. The cost of tuition has gone up so much. I have already been excepted in a Master Program at another college after I am done with Ashford. You can not make anything lower than a B in the college that I will be going to in the fall. I love the school. I have been able to learn at my pace and spend time with my family. I have also referred three friends to the college.

Hello Faith,

I know what you mean! College tuition is going up and assistance is going down! The requirements are getting tougher and tougher to qualify for a Pell Grant. Scholarships are disappearing and the government assistance programs are almost non-existent!

However, one must do what one must do to achieve a higher-level of education! I applaud your graduating AU and furthering your education with a Masters! I know you can keep your grades up and you will go far! CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

My question is a stipend check part of my unsbsidize and subsidize loan?

cluense profile image

cluense Hub Author 9 months ago

Tabbath,

A stipend check is the remaining amount that is left over from your Unsubsidized, Subsidized, and Pell grants. What they do is take out any fees or current amount you owe, deduct for 3 classes and you receive the amount that is left over. Hence, a stipend check.

Hope that helps,

Cluense,

You did a helpful contribution to me and I am sure to many by this site! We all know about the reputation and level of Ashford University but you have explained it very well that now even few of the hesitations are clear. However, I wanted to know about the books for my niece as recently he has joined Ashford. As you said not to buy from Saint Book Store so I am just expecting a better name from where I should recommend him.

I have been at Ashford since 2008. I completed my BA in Psychology in August and began my MATLT program Aug. 30th. I have received regular stipends all the time enrolled. If you have an economic hardship you can circumvent the 30/70 policy by submitting a hardship request. You will then receive 100% of your stipend within 14 days. I just recently signed up for Direct Deposit and my stipend of $5609.00 was released today but in the student portal direct deposit page it still has not been credited for deposit. How long after the stipend is cut does it take to get credited for direct deposit?

Amanda 7 months ago

I received my grant and loans on September 13. Ashford showed a stipend payment on September 20. It didn't show up on Sallie Mae's ledger until this morning as pending. Hopefully it will be in the bank tomorrow.

Hope that helps!

I have received my award letter about a month ago , it does not give a disburstment date. I was told that my disburstment date was suppose to have been on the the 13th of October but nothing is showing on my portal. What the heck is going on. I HAVE never had this much trouble with my previous universiy.

Just a quick note: all schools refund leftover student loan money - that's federal law.

Also, keep in mind that it's not *free* and is a loan that you will have to pay back, after graduation, whether you have found a job or not. Sometimes the better option is to tell the Financial Aid office to please return the funds to the lender, so your total debt upon graduation (or separation from school - you owe either way), is as small as possible.

It is also important to understand that you cannot discharge student loans in bankruptcy; they will follow you to your grave, and in fact, your social security stipend can be withheld to pay your outstanding students loans.

The student loan crisis is reaching record proportions, as this article points out: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43584744/ns/business-p

Forewarned is forearmed on these issues!!

Very informative website. Just reading the post has giving me faith that I will recieve my stipend soon. It has been 7 business days and I have recieved nothing. Does it come by FEDEX or UPS? I live in a trailor park with a roommate who does not have a mailbox out here. So they must deliver this kind of mail to my door correct?

cluense profile image

cluense Hub Author 6 weeks ago

Hello Michael,

They deliver your check to the address you have registered with the college via USPS. It comes in the regular mail delivery. So, however you receive your regular mail is how it will come. For example, if the mail person normally knocks on your door (because you do not have a mail box) then that is how it will be delivered, unless you signed up for direct deposit with your bank.
